The recent sunny weather had inspired this cleanout. Each morning had seen the sun beaming through the windows urging action and resulting in shelves being sorted and cupboards cleaned out.
At 4 a.m. Saturday morning I woke to the sound of heavy rain beating on the roof. "Blah", I thought. "It will ease by daylight". No such luck!
By 6 am it was admittedly lighter, more drizzle than rain but backed by dark grey clouds that threatened to unload any minute.
Still, it was reasonable to assume it would go away, after all we in Queenstown are quite used to adverse conditions and it is not uncommon for the sun to poke through mid morning.
I dragged out the tables and laid out the goodies. (Making sure to keep the books away from any rainy spots). There was quite a selection but the lay out was half hearted all inspiration washed away with the rain.
I even elected to drag out my golf clubs seeing as it is over two years since I set foot on a golf course; damn being sick so long! I love my clubs, beautiful graphite shafts supported stainless steel heads that helped me whack the ball for miles, okay miles is a slight exaggeration but I got good distance.
I really enjoyed the game and the walk too until the soggy ground helped me to get pneumonia.
Over 26 weeks that lingered, then a few flu's and finally a heart attack in the November. All that kinda put me off playing though the urge still hits at times. I will play again if I move towns. I won't play here though, the course is too wet for my health and I just can't risk it. I still have children to raise before I drop off the perch.
Back to my beautiful clubs. I had paid well over $1000.oo all up for the clubs and bag etc., Had them some three years but only used minimally for time owned. I am well aware that garage sale shoppers are looking for a bargain and didn't want to over price them but considered $400 to be appropriate. Less than half price for what still looked brand new.
There might have been some attachment that priced them so as if I really wanted them gone I might have sold them at whatever I was offered. No-one came with $400 in their pocket and the darlings are back in the wardrobe; they don't take up much space,(really!).
In fact very few people turned up. Perhaps it was the bad weather, or my rushed advertising, or even the fact that people here are not the bargain hunters of other places. There were no early callers arriving as I set up, no inability to get a cuppa or food break and no flood of dollars in the cash tin!
Yes a few did come, mostly neighbours, spending but not to excess. The days effort brought in a few hundred dollars at most and cleared very little space in the house long term. I guess the local op shop will benefit in the long run as I really need the space and don't think I will bother with the garage sale idea again!
My youngest daughter made more money than I. She is quite the skilled salesperson and has an uncanny knack of gathering money to her. Something she did not inherit from me! At least she is always good for a loan; but her interest rates are high, yes that's right, she charges interest!
I did sell lots of small items and some art, so the day wasn't a total waste.
By the end of the day when we had decided to drag it all inside again what happened? You might have guessed it - THE SUN CAME OUT!
The gods were laughing at my efforts - GREAT JOKE GOD!
