Books- what is happening to them!

What is to become of the printed word? While I anticipated the pleasure of a reading tablet that will free up so much space in the home, virtually eliminating the need for bulky bookcases, I lament the loss of the actual book!

When I was small I loved the books containing etchings and protective paper covered prints. It was sad to see these go by the wayside and it will be sad to see the common book go the same way. It is inevitable that this will be the case as demand is the means to keep a business running and the demand is fast falling.

Sure every now and again a Harry Potter or Da Vinci Code will bring the readers into the spotlight but once in a blue moon will not see the small publishing companies survive the introduction of the tablet. Hell I even want one!

Imagine the future of schools -- book day will consist of a laptop or tablet or both -- would make it cheaper over the years! Save the trees!

Perhaps one day in a thousand years someone will reinvent the printed word -- books of today will be treasures traded in auction houses for supreme amounts and the old ones of now like I have will be worth milllions...where's my time machine? Shouldn't I have one of them by now!

One of my antiquarian books was printed in 1789. I look at the careful way it was made to last and wonder if the paperback will even last long enough to become such a treasure?

Still, I have one thing in my favour, I have a house full of these oneday to become treasures!
